The firing of James Comey as head of the FBI looks like a scene from Donald Trump’s reality show, “The Apprentice.”
With no decorum, civility or due process, Comey was skewered while doing his job on the other side of the country. The timing and blatantly false justification for that action screamed out for the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate Trump’s political and financial ties to Russia.
To say that Comey was treating Hillary Clinton unfairly before the election, when Trump was praising Comey for his actions at the time, just reeks of duplicity. An investigator knows that the changing stories of a perpetrator indicate untruthful responses.
When Trump did not take immediate action regarding the serious allegations about Michael Flynn, he jeopardized national security for 18 days. He must have thought that it could be swept under the rug, which fits his profile and regard for the rule of law.
Our democracy is under attack by this president. Freedom of the press is at risk amid attacks of “fake news.” Constitutional checks and balances are dismissed amid rants about “so-called” judges, and key Justice Department investigators are fired for getting too close to the Trump “magic curtain.”
The lack of appointments to important government jobs follows a pattern of “deconstructing the administrative state.”
Last, and most importantly, the rule of law is being disregarded by this president in so many ways, it makes Nixon look like a choir boy. A good lawyer would tell Trump to stop talking and tweeting before he gets the boot from the job, for which he is eminently unqualified to do.
