Updated Saturday, May 27, 2017 | 8:24 p.m.

A 13-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition this afternoon after being struck by a car in the southwest valley while he was riding a mini motorcycle, according to Metro Police.

Police and medical crews were dispatched about 1:50 p.m. to Coldwater Creek Road and Erie Avenue, near Buffalo Drive and Cactus Avenue, Lt. Carlos Hank said.

The child was rushed to University Medical Center, Hank said. Due to the severity of the injuries, Metro's traffic-fatality unit was called to investigate.

An initial investigation determined that the boy failed to yield at a stop sign and was struck by a 2006 BMW 330i, police said. The 32-year-old driver was cooperating with investigators.

Police initially said the boy was on a kick scooter.
