Nevada taxable sales up 3.3 percent in August

CARSON CITY — Nevada saw an increase of 3.3 percent in taxable sales in August, but tax collections for the first two months of the fiscal year are below projections.

The state Department of Taxation reported today that taxable sales reached $4.7 billion, with food and beverage outlets reporting a 9.8 percent increase in business and a 21.8 percent gain in accommodations compared to August 2016.

But sales tax collections were $5 million below the projection of the Economic Forum for July and August, officials said.

Sales increased in 10 of Nevada’s 17 counties in August. They fell by 78.4 percent in Mineral County and 47 percent in Storey County.

The department said taxable sales in Clark County rose 3.7 percent to $3.3 billion. Sales of building materials jumped 13.7 percent, while sales at bars and restaurants increased by 2.5 percent.

But there were some soft spots in Clark County, with car sales off 0.2 percent and a decline of 1.1 percent at clothing stores. Sales of appliances dropped 19.5 percent.
