Letters to the Editor:

How will Laxalt implement law?

On Nov. 1, exactly one month after the tragic shooting on the Strip, I traveled across town to attend Adam Laxalt’s announcement of his run for governor.

As a concerned citizen and Nevada voter, I was eager to hear what Mr. Laxalt had to say, especially about the background check ballot initiative that Nevadans voted for a year ago but has yet to be implemented. I am a volunteer with the gun violence prevention group Moms Demand Action and wore my T-shirt.

Before I even reached the check-in table at Brady Industries, a Laxalt campaign aide approached me and said, “You know you will not be allowed inside wearing that shirt.” I replied that I was a Nevada voter with tickets to the event and had no intention of disrupting it in any way. He ignored my response, stated that this was a private event and threatened to tow my car.

I am astonished that Adam Laxalt would exclude Nevada voters from his campaign announcement and allow his staff to treat constituents so rudely.

I have been closely following Laxalt’s opinions to Gov. Brian Sandoval regarding the background check initiative and the subsequent lawsuit filed by Nevadans for Background Checks. Since I was denied access to the event, I am now asking my question publicly to candidate Laxalt: As attorney general, how do you plan to help the governor implement the background check initiative and what assurances are you willing to give voters that you will enforce the law if you become governor?
