A man who pointed a gun at a woman he had a confrontation with this evening outside a Silverado Ranch-area convenience store was shot and killed by police.

The woman was struck by gunfire in the stomach and is expected to recover at University Medical Center, Metro Police Capt. Kelly McMahill said.

Investigators aren’t certain if she was struck by police or by a bullet the suspect fired, and McMahill said it could take time to determine because both guns used 9 mm rounds.

Officers responded about 5:30 p.m. to a call about a man who was choking a woman in front of the Rhino Mart, 780 Pyle Avenue, near Pollock Drive, McMahill said.

When police arrived, the man was holding the woman, and at some point pulled out a gun, McMahill said. An officer pleaded with the couple — for the man to let the woman go, and for the woman to try to free herself.

While this was going on, an officer secured the couple’s 10-year-old daughter, McMahill said. She was unharmed.

Another officer arrived and also gave the man commands to drop the gun and let the woman go, which he disobeyed, McMahill said. At some point, the man pointed the gun at the woman, prompting that officer to fire four rounds.

The man went down and the woman announced that she’d been hit, McMahill said. She was rushed to UMC where she was in stable condition and had spoken to her daughter.

It wasn’t clear if the couple was dating or married, but early in the probe, investigators had not linked the couple to domestic-related police calls, McMahill said.

This was the 21st officer-involved shooting of the year involving Metro. A detailed briefing is expected within 72 hours.
