From “teen topics” and the law to nuclear threats, no subject seemed to intimidate the students at the 61st Las Vegas Sun Youth Forum.

Nearly 1,000 students from 52 local high schools gathered Nov. 8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, attending discussions moderated by thought leaders from diverse sectors.

But the debate continued beyond the event, on the pages of surveys. Students were asked to define the American dream and gauge their optimism about the future, as well as to assess President Donald Trump’s first year in the White House. This selection supports the notion that Trump is a polarizing figure.

• • •

Nope. The only thing worse would be a capable and dimwitted president. Thankfully, the man is incapable.

• • •

No, he has divided the country.

• • •

There have been some setbacks, but I feel he is putting our best interests first, from dealing with China in the South China Sea to taking a strong political stance in Europe.

• • •

I do, because he says how he feels and not what others tell him to say.

No. He is unprofessional, ineffective, offensive and unfit to function as a leader. He is an embarrassment to the nation.

• • •

I believe he is weakening our relations with allies while strengthening our negative relationships with enemies.

• • •

He has bettered the economy, but his actions have hurt our reputation with the rest of the world.

• • •

He has done things I agree and disagree with, but I think he is criticized too harshly.

• • •

He uses his emotions too much. He lets his frustration get the best of him, and so he is very impulsive. He should rely on facts and evidence rather than his own beliefs and opinions.

• • •

His explicit attack on minorities and unethical approaches to solving problems concern me. The open “melting pot” title that we have established is being compromised.

• • •

I approve of Donald Trump’s performance because of his tax-reform system and his immigration ideas.

• • •

Yes, he hasn’t done anything radical.

• • •

I think he is immature and not fit for office. He doesn’t understand the Constitution and disrespects the system of checks and balances.

I disapprove because he makes

short-term choices.

• • •

I think he has been too provocative and clueless. His openness bolstered his supporters, but we have to realize the consequences.

• • •

No, he is not a “consider everyone” kind of leader. It is obvious his agenda is biased in favor of rich white men. He is disregarding low-income, minority families and is not a good role model.

• • •

I love Donald Trump. He is smart and capable. Knows his stuff.

• • •

I do not support his rhetoric or childish behavior in the slightest. He should present himself in a much more mature manner, but I agree with his politics.

• • •

Only time will tell if he will be a mediocre president or one of the worst.

• • •

He has had trouble uniting people and thus solidifying a foundation to build policies from.

• • •

He has and is currently splitting our society apart.

• • •

The president acts primarily as a symbol of leadership. In my opinion, the conflict this president has both caused and not properly addressed diminishes this symbol.

I don’t think he’s a bad president, but I do think he’s a bad representation of our people and country.

• • •

Trump fundamentally sets a bad example for youth everywhere.

• • •

Most of his policies are based in multidepartment recommendations, and he has taken tangible action where he sees fit.

• • •

I feel President Trump is insensitive to disasters and his responses aren’t sincere.

• • •

In some respects, I can’t find myself agreeing with him, while in others, I need more time to judge his actions.

• • •

He has acted childishly and doesn’t know what to say or what not to say.

• • •

He is good for the U.S. in the form of a wake-up call.

• • •

Donald Trump is the reason the country is unstable.

• • •

He is doing what he said he was going to do.

• • •

Trump has spent more time golfing than he has in office.

Donald Trump is unfit for his position because he seems trapped in his own personal bubble and refuses to look at other people’s viewpoints.

• • •

I approve of his efforts to make a change, but I don’t approve of how he goes about his ways.

• • •

He is a demagogue and rallied support via toxic rhetoric that conflated nativism and nationalism. He is a danger to our democracy.

• • •

I believe it’s too early to see the impact he’ll have on our nation.

• • •

As an immigrant, I think my life is in danger even if I’m a permanent resident. I haven’t seen any positive change from him.

• • •

He is a harm to diplomacy worldwide and is causing problems that were nonexistent before the start of his term.

• • •

I don’t think that he’s done anything as bad as we all thought was going to, but he also hasn’t done much to help move America forward.

• • •

He does not reflect the values that are supposed to make this country so great.

• • •

I think he represents and demonstrates a lot of wrong things in this country.

The amount of jobs is at an all-time high, but he often is not politically correct.

• • •

President Trump doesn’t act with tact. He relies more on his gut feelings than evidence.

• • •

He acts like a child with everything.

• • •

Trump’s main goals are merely stripping away what Obama has created.

• • •

Donald Trump is a good president, but he needs help. I don’t believe he was ready. And certain things he shouldn’t be able to do, like ban people’s social media sites or build a wall in Mexico by making them pay for it.

• • •

I approve of Trump’s performance because he’s not a coward and not afraid to speak his mind.

• • •

Trump’s performance so far has not been ideal, but we cannot judge him based on the first year. I’m not a supporter of him, but he ... doesn’t really know what he is doing and how it is affecting him for the future, especially if he wants to run again.

• • •

Trump is tearing apart our country.

• • •

I absolutely do not approve of Donald Trump’s performance as president. However, his election can be viewed as a good thing, since it may spark mass reformation.
