Metro Police to use acoustic technology to pinpoint gunfire

Metro Police and Clark County officials are introducing acoustic technology today to rapidly identify the source of gunfire.

Authorities are deploying the ShotSpotter system, which uses triangulation to pinpoint the source of a gunshot. Acoustic sensors on buildings and utility posts can detect gunshots and alert police dispatchers within 30 to 45 seconds to their exact location.

ShotSpotter has been deployed in about 90 cities across the U.S., including New York, Chicago and St. Louis, according to the company.

Metro announced a news conference for later today to talk about plans to launch the system in the Las Vegas area.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
