Moments before he lay on the street with fatal stab wounds, Jose Juan Garcia-Hernandez was drinking beers while on a “date” with a woman who investigators later learned had plotted with two other suspects to ambush and rob him.

After the Oct. 10 slaying in a cul-de-sac behind an apartment complex on Soprano Lane and Cory Place, the trio of suspects fled with Garcia-Hernandez’s car, wallet, phone and tools, according to a Metro Police arrest report.

Dorie Henley, 25, her brother, Andrew Henley, 21, and Jose Franco, 25, were arrested on Sunday, police said.

When the investigation was launched — soon after the 10:01 p.m. call reporting a body on the street near Jones and Charleston boulevards — detectives had leads, including witnesses who reported hearing a woman’s voice and screeching tires and seeing two men jump an apartment complex wall, and records of calls between Garcia-Hernandez and Dorie Henley’s phones, police said.

But a clearer picture emerged when a pair of tipsters came forward.

On Saturday, detectives interviewed a person who told them Dorie Henley had called and texted two days after the slaying, saying that she’d needed money to feed her children and purchase diapers, so she set up a robbery near Jones and Charleston, police said.

The tipster said Henley had said she’d lured the victim with the promise of sex, but that when she tried to take his wallet, the man tried to stop her, police said. That’s when she yelled out and Andrew Henley and Franco stepped in, jumping the victim before stabbing him in the back.

Another tipster told detectives that Dorie Henley called the day after the slaying, telling that person to “watch the evening news” because she’d “done something” near Jones and Charleston, police said.

Police interviewed and arrested the suspects on Sunday, according to the report. Dorie Henley admitted to the robbery conspiracy and told investigators the two men had jumped Garcia-Hernandez, and that she saw her brother kick him in the face, while Franco made “punching and swinging” motions toward the victim.

Franco told detectives he and Andrew Henley had “kicked (the victim’s) ass,” but didn’t remember who stabbed him because “he was high,” police said.

Andrew Henley said that he was trying to break up a fight despite throwing punches and that he saw Franco use a metal object to stab Garcia-Hernandez, police said.

After Garcia-Hernandez was on the ground, Andrew Henley said, he saw his sister digging through the victim’s pockets and taking his wallet, police said.

The suspects are being held at the Clark County Detention Center, each booked on one count of murder with a deadly weapon, robbery with a deadly weapon, robbery conspiracy, auto theft, and conspiracy to commit a miscellaneous crime, jail logs show. They’re expected in court on Nov. 1.
