Committee OKs almost $2 million for opioid program

CARSON CITY — A legislative committee today approved a request from Attorney General Adam Laxalt to spend nearly $2 million to fight the opioid problem facing Nevada.

The money comes from an unrelated $5.3 million settlement, and Laxalt said he has worked with Gov. Brian Sandoval’s office in deciding the priorities.

The Legislative Interim Finance Committee voted unanimously to spend the money. The money will go toward things including education programs, incinerators to dispose of drugs and Narcan, a drug that can be used by first-responders and in hospitals to reverse the effects of opioids.

“On average, one Nevadan dies per day from drug overdose,” Laxalt said.

Michael Willden, the governor’s chief of staff, said Sandoval supports the efforts and has worked with the attorney general to determine how the money should be spent.
