They were in the same spot last season.

The Shadow Ridge High football team needed just one victory in its final three games to make the playoffs, while Palo Verde need to win its final three contests to grab a postseason berth. Palo Verde beat Shadow Ridge and closed the regular season on a winning streak to claim the Northwest League’s final seed.

The teams meet again tonight in a similar spot — if Shadow Ridge wins, it will be a playoff qualifier. If Palo Verde wins, its hopes of reaching the postseason — something it has done every fall since the mid-1990s — would still be alive entering next week’s regular season finale.

“We are a better football team than a year ago,” Shadow Ridge coach Travis Foster said two weeks ago. “Our kids are going to need to want it because nobody is going to give you anything in the Northwest.”

Tonight’s slate of games is highlighted by a pair of rivalries. The "Bone Game" between Las Vegas and host Rancho hasn’t been competitive in two decades but is still meaningful to supporters of both communities. Las Vegas, again, is expected to post a lopsided victory.

And in Henderson, the Battle for Boulder Highway between Foothill and Basic is always one of the best-attended games of the season. The schools are located a few miles apart separated by Boulder Highway, and many of the players competed on the same youth team as children and attended the same grade school.
