First-time unemployment claims lowest since 1998

CARSON CITY — The number of Nevadans filing first-time claims for unemployment benefits in September fell to its lowest since August 1998.

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported today that 9,068 people filed initial claims in September, down 15 percent from August.

Alessandro Capello, an economist in the department, said that for the first nine months of the year, first-time claims have fallen by 4 percent from the same period last year.

The peak for first-time claims was 36,414 in December 2008.
