A 31-year-old man was slain in a shooting outside a North Las Vegas house this afternoon and detectives were questioning a suspect, according to city police.

Officers arrived about 12:40 p.m. and found a man gravely wounded with multiple gunshots just outside the house in the 2000 block of Hassell Avenue, near Lake Mead Boulevard and Comstock Drive, police spokesman Eric Leavitt said. The victim died at the scene.

The suspect, who was only described as a 26-year-old black woman, was cooperating and speaking to detectives, Leavitt said about 3 p.m. Her relationship to the victim was not immediately known, but police don’t believe the shooting was a "random act of violence," he added.

Investigators were probing the circumstances that led to the shooting, Leavitt said. The suspect was not the 911 caller, but she stayed at the scene after gunfire erupted, Leavitt said.

About 3 p.m., a woman standing behind the yellow police tape lamented the shooting, but stressed relief of there being no children on the street at the time of slaying, she said. A man who lives a few houses from the scene said he's never seen heavy police activity in what he called a quiet community.

Further details were not immediately available.
