Show up, ball out

Las Vegas Sun's Ray Brewer and Case Keefer toast all the area teams who defeated out of state competition in week 1, and look forward to an almost-as-loaded week 2 schedule.

Diamonte Burton racked up more than 250 yards of total offense and four touchdowns as Canyon Springs cruised by rival Cheyenne 41-6 Friday night.

The Pioneers needed the win after suffering a big loss to St. Augustine in California the week prior. They got just that as quarterback Kayjon Edwards completed 11-of-14 passes for 160 yards and three touchdowns.

“Execution-wise it was important for the offense to improve,” Canyon Springs coach Gus McNair said. “We were terrible on the first week and it was imperative with Clayton Valley (Calif.) coming in next week.”

A Canyon Springs defense that allowed 51 points last week held Cheyenne scoreless until the final six minutes of the game.

“We had a lot of big plays from (defensive tackle) Germaine Carmena,” McNair said. “We got consistent pressure from our defensive line.”

The Pioneers led 28-0 at halftime, and Burton took the first play of the second half 65 yards for a score to seal the game.

Next week Canyon Springs hosts Clayton Valley, who beat the Pioneers 35-7 last season.
