Show up, ball out

Las Vegas Sun's Ray Brewer and Case Keefer toast all the area teams who defeated out of state competition in week 1, and look forward to an almost-as-loaded week 2 schedule.

Aubrey Nellems carried the ball 20 times for 234 yards and a touchdown today for the Shadow Ridge High football team in a 51-30 victory against Coronado.

The Mustangs trailed 27-26 before pulling away in the second half. They accumulated 660 yards of offense, including 551 rushing yards.

“Overall, the kids played well minus a few plays,” Shadow Ridge coach Travis Foster said.

Those plays, including two long passes and a kick return for a touchdown, gave the Mustangs a different challenge than in the initial week of the season. Last week, they scored on the first play against Desert Oasis and won by the mercy rule of a running clock.

“It was a great (learning experience) to have our backs against the wall there for a little bit,” Foster said.

Kody Presser rushed for 87 yards and two touchdowns, and added 109 passing yards. Kaejin Smith had three touchdowns, two on the ground and a 48-yard reception.
