Las Vegas Sun's Ray Brewer and Case Keefer toast all the area teams who defeated out of state competition in week 1, and look forward to an almost-as-loaded week 2 schedule.

The Sunrise Mountain High football team surrendered a touchdown in the first quarter today against visiting Eldorado for an early deficit.

But the Miners received 225 yards rushing and three touchdowns from Trayvon Ward in scoring 52 unanswered points to close the game with a 52-7 victory.

“We started a little slow and then our kids got rolling,” Sunrise Mountain coach Chris Sawyers said.

Quarterback Tyree Hayes rushed and passed for two touchdowns, helping the Miners improve to 1-1 on the season. Last week, they lost by one point at Moapa Valley, a perennial class 3A power.

Xavier Kyle had two touchdowns for the Miners, while Pierce Williams and Anthony Cole-Green also scored.

“This was huge for our kids — no question,” Sawyers said. “With Eldorado being so close to here, it is always nice to beat the people down the street.”
