Moapa Valley’s last two games were shootouts; Saturday’s trip to Boulder City was a slugfest.
The Pirates blanked the Eagles 16-0 in a Saturday afternoon contest marred with turnovers and missed opportunities.
“It was just an ugly game,” Lewis said. “We couldn’t get out of our own way.”
Moapa Valley had six turnovers — four fumbles and two interceptions — but Boulder City suffered from just as many miscues. One particularly devastating Eagles’ mistake came on a fumble at Moapa Valley’s 1-yard line early in the third quarter when the Pirates were only up 7-0.
Moapa Valley scored later in the quarter when senior running back Logan Jackson ran in a short touchdown. Jackson also scored the Pirates’ first touchdown late in the first quarter.
He tallied eight carries for 53 yards in total, and was the team's second leading rusher behind Braeden St. John, who had 17 carries for 97 yards. Derek Reese caught seven passes for 71 yards from Daxton Longman, who finished 9-for-13 passing for 153 yards.
“We would complete a 20-yard pass and then get stripped and fumble,” Lewis said. “It was just one of those kinds of games.”
The final points of the game came appropriately when Boulder City recovered a fumble in their own end zone in the final minutes for a safety.
