Woman, 71, hit by car and killed crossing street

A car hit two people in a crosswalk Tuesday night, killing a 71-year-old Las Vegas woman and seriously injuring another pedestrian, according to Metro Police.

The incident was reported about 8 p.m. at Fort Apache Road and Lake South Drive, just north of Desert Inn Road in the west valley.

Three people were crossing Fort Apache when the car, which was headed south on the same street, hit two women in the crosswalk, police said.

The injured pedestrians were taken to University Medical Center, where the 71-year-old woman was pronounced dead, police said. Her name was not released, pending notification of her family.

The other woman, a 36-year-old Las Vegas resident, suffered serious injures, while the third pedestrian, a 70-year-old Las Vegas man, escaped injury, police said.

The driver, a 25-year-old woman from Las Vegas, remained at the scene to make a statement to police, authorities said.

There are traffic signals at the intersection, but police did not indicate whether the pedestrians were crossing with or against the light. The incident remains under investigation, police said.
