Lyon County petition would ban prostitution at brothels

RENO — A group of Lyon County activists has filed a petition to repeal the local ordinance that allows for legal prostitution at brothels in the rural Nevada county just east of Carson City.

Kimberly Mull, an advocate for the group No Little Girl, filed the petition Thursday with the Lyon County clerk.

Mull told the Reno Gazette Journal the group believes that, "No little girl wants to grow up a prostitute."

She wants the community to give brothel workers training and new jobs if the brothels close.

The group needs 3,355 signatures to get the referendum on the November ballot.

Four brothels owned by state legislative candidate Dennis Hof are located within the county at Mound House 7 miles (11 kilometers) east of Carson City.

Hof says the move would only shift prostitution to the streets where it's more dangerous.
