The devil took the leaders of the American evangelicals to the highest point in the land, where they could look out across its breadth, and said, “I will give you temporal power and a hegemony in this country, where your words will be accepted as the word of God. All you need to do is turn from the one you used to worship and swear fealty to my orange minion, then sow the seeds of distrust, prejudice and judgment that I love so much, shaming the poor, the widow, the orphan, the foreigner, and those of a different color than you.”
And the leaders of the American evangelicals said, “Sounds like a good deal to us.”
