CARSON CITY — A 55-year-old former Nevada middle school teacher, youth soccer coach, foster parent and part-time police officer has died in prison while serving 60 years to life in a child sexual assault case that stunned his hometown of Boulder City, near Las Vegas.

The Nevada Department of Corrections said Tuesday that Charles Richard "Rick" Rogers died Monday in the High Desert State Prison infirmary, where he was treated for an unspecified illness.

Prisons spokeswoman Brooke Santina says an autopsy was planned but foul play was not suspected.

Rogers avoided trial on more than 70 charges when he pleaded guilty in March 2010 to sexual assault, lewdness and pornography involving children under 14 years old.

Authorities alleged sexual assaults involving multiple boys at Rogers' home for about a decade.
