Moapa Valley dominated the first half of its home opener against Democracy Prep Friday night, and yet had little to show for it.

The Pirates led only 7-6 after committing four turnovers in the red zone.

“So we had a little chat at halftime,” Moapa coach Brent Lewis said.

Moapa Valley came out like a different team in the second half, swarming Democracy Prep en route to a 41-6 victory. The Pirates rushed for 249 total yards, with senior Braeden St. John and junior Trystin Lehman combining for three touchdowns.

St. John had 108 rushing yards, while Lehman racked up 95 yards.

The Pirates’ defense also scored twice, including a 24-yard interception return from senior Derek Reese.

“It seemed like we had no energy (in the first half),” Lewis said. “We’ve still got a long way to go.”
