Signs of squatters at vacant duplex fire, officials say

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said they found signs of squatter activity at a vacant home that caught fire today just east of downtown.

Nobody was injured.

The blaze was reported about 12:35 p.m. at an empty duplex in the 400 block of North 13th Street, near U.S. 95 and Maryland Parkway, officials said. The fire, which created heavy smoke in the area, was out within about 35 minutes, officials said.

A burning mattress was found outside the home when crews arrived, officials said.
