Letter to the editor:

Wheeler should not be confirmed

Last year, Andrew Wheeler said he believed man has an impact on climate change, but “what’s not completely understood is what the impact is.”

In July, Wheeler was appointed deputy administrator, and shortly thereafter, acting administrator, of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Rather than take steps to do what we can to minimize the effects of climate change, Wheeler supported the rollback of clean car regulations, weakening of key safeguards limiting methane and other harmful pollutants from the oil and gas industry, reversed uranium mining regulations and supported opening portions of the Bears Ears National Monument to uranium mining.

Prior to his nomination as deputy administrator, Wheeler worked with Murray Energy, a coal mining company, to kill environmental regulations affecting that industry.

We need an EPA administrator who recognizes the importance of the agency and will protect the health of Americans and our environment. Nevada’s senators, Dean Heller and Catherine Cortez Masto, should vote against confirming Wheeler. We can and must do better.
