A 75-year-old inmate serving life in prison for murder has died in hospice care, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections.

Rudiberto Guerrero, who was locked up at the Southern Desert Correctional Center for slaying a man more than two decades ago, died Tuesday morning in a city hospice facility, officials said.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office will determine his cause of death.

Guerrero, inmate No. 57162, and his son, Alberto Guerrero, were convicted of murder in early 1998.

In December 1996, the father and son gunned down Manuel Monpie in Las Vegas, who died from a shotgun blast to the face and four .22-caliber pistol rounds, according to previous reports.

The younger Guerrero had fled to Colorado and later Kansas, but surrendered a short time later. The handgun was registered to him.

Not long after, the elder Guerrero was in handcuffs. Police found three shotgun shells in his pocket.

The duo were handed the lightest possible punishment — life in prison, but with parole eligibility in 2028.
