The Clark County School Board tabled a decision on drafting a transgender policy for a second time this year at Thursday night’s agenda meeting after concerns about violating open-meeting laws.
The board postponed a vote on the topic at its Jan. 29 meeting because not all trustees were present.
At the beginning of Thursday's meeting, which drew an overflow crowd hoping to sound off on the controversial issue at the Edward Greer Education Center on East Flamingo Road, Trustee Kevin Child tried to move the agenda item to another day but was overruled by fellow trustees.
It wasn’t until concerns of the board potentially violating open-meeting laws that the agenda item was pulled, as many would-be attendees remained outside of the building without access to the meeting.
“We had a lot of interest in the community tonight about an item we had regarding the possibility of creating a gender-diverse policy,” said Kirsten Searer, CCSD chief of communications, marketing, and strategy officer. “Because of the interest we had and the fact that there were about a hundred outside who weren’t able to make it in and some concerns that were expressed about open-meeting law violations ... the trustees decided to postpone the item until they could find a larger venue.”
CCSD will notify the public when the item will be on the agenda again, Searer said. The school board's next general meeting is scheduled for March 8.
