Second person dies after North Las Vegas building fire

A second person has died from injuries suffered in a fire Tuesday started accidentally by squatters using a warming fire in a vacant commercial building, according to the North Las Vegas Fire Department.

The woman, who was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition, died about 3:30 a.m. today, officials said.

The fire was reported about 9 a.m. Tuesday at the two-story building in the 2000 block of Las Vegas Boulevard. Heavy smoke and flames were coming from second-story apartments at the back of the building, officials said.

Firefighters rescued two people hanging out of windows on the second floor, officials said. They were taken to UMC with minor injuries, officials said.

Crews forced their way into the apartments and found the critically injured woman and another person who had died, officials said. Their names were not released.

The fire caused about $100,000 in damage, officials said.
