Highway Patrol reports 3 fatal wrecks in new year

The Nevada Highway Patrol released details today on three fatal crashes in the new year, including one Tuesday that left a Henderson man dead.

A pickup truck was north on U.S. 95 near Boulder Highway when it went out of control, hit concrete barriers and was left disabled in the left travel lane, the patrol said. The driver, who was not hurt, got out of the truck, the patrol said.

About five minutes later, an SUV ran into the back of the pickup, killing the driver, Scott Butler, 64, of Henderson, the patrol said.

The driver of the pickup truck, whose name was not provided, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, the patrol said.

On Monday, a car was headed east about 5 p.m. on State Route 375, also known as the Extraterrestrial Highway, when the driver failed to yield at the Y intersection of State Route 318 and started to make a U-turn in the path of a semitractor-trailer, the patrol said.

The truck driver hit the brakes hard but couldn’t stop and collided with the car near Crystal Springs, north of Las Vegas, the patrol said.

The driver of the car, Kristina Andrade, 33, of Aiea, Hawaii, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the car, also from Hawaii, was airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas with critical injuries, the patrol said.

The truck driver was not injured.

In another crash earlier Monday, a group of motorcyclists were headed east on Blue Diamond Road about 3:30 p.m. when a rider in the rear of the group ran off the road onto the dirt shoulder, the patrol said. He lost control and was ejected, the patrol said.

The rider, James Walker, 62, of North Las Vegas, was pronounced dead at the scene, the patrol said.

Investigators don’t believe speed was a factor in the wreck, and Walker was wearing a helmet, the patrol said.
