Chef for Kids continuing in its mission to promote healthy eating

Forming healthy eating habits in early childhood is a necessary step to prevent chronic diseases later in life. But with 63.55 percent of Clark County School District’s students qualifying for free or reduce lunch, many students’ daily diets fail to meet all their nutritional needs.

Chef for Kids formed 26 years ago to teach healthy eating and sanitary habits to youth. The non-profit focuses on schools in the district where the highest rate of students are enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program.

Chefs from some Las Vegas hotels visit the schools to serve a healthy buffet breakfast and provide teachers education materials like literature, pamphlets and videos.

Chef for Kids is looking for volunteers to help serve breakfast or for donors to help raise funds. They are also looking for chefs.

“Unfortunately, in a city like Las Vegas it’s amazing how many children go throughout the day without getting the nutritional value that they need,” said Richard Cino, the Chefs for Kids treasurer. “A lot of it has to do with economics.”
