Officers got into a high-speed chase and a running gunfight after spotting an SUV linked to a fatal shooting this morning at a central valley car wash, according to Metro Police.

One suspect was killed and one was wounded, police said. No officers were injured.

The incident started about 7:30 a.m. at a self-car wash in the 1400 block of Eastern Avenue, where a man was shot and later died at University Medical Center, Metro Capt. Yasenia Yatomi said.

Officers patrolling the area about two hours later spotted a black Ford Expedition suspected of being involved in the shooting, Yatomi said. During an attempted stop, the SUV sped away with officers in pursuit, she said.

During the chase, the suspects shot at the officers, prompting them to return fire, Yatomi said.

It wasn’t clear where the encounter initially occurred, but it ended in front of Howard Hollingsworth Elementary School, near Bruce and Fremont streets, about a mile from the first shooting, Yatomi said.

One of the suspects again tried to get away in the vehicle but was fatally wounded during an exchange of gunfire with police, Yatomi said. The second suspect fled toward the school but was taken into custody outside, she said.

No one else was injured, Yatomi said. The surviving suspect, who was in stable condition at UMC, was shot, but it wasn’t clear by whom, Yatomi said.

The investigation remained under investigation this afternoon, and officers had blocked off several streets in the area.
