Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement from the Supreme Court has made it crucial that Barack Obama hit the campaign trail for Democratic candidates.
These are extraordinary times. Obama must use his persuasive powers to foil Trump’s plan to appoint another Supreme Court justice who will rule on cases the way Trump would.
Obama has justification for inserting himself in this year’s midterms because he was victimized by the cutthroats in the Senate, who refused to vet his choice to replace the late Antonin Scalia on the grounds that it was an election year. This year is also an election year.
Liberals and progressives must work to put Democrats in charge of the House and the Senate. It’s the only way to have a voice in the selection of the next Supreme Court justice.
Obama has the right and the duty to campaign because he was the one who made the mistake of quietly acquiescing when the Senate robbed him of his presidential power to appoint a justice.
