Donald Kirk’s June 26 column “Little has changed on the Korean Peninsula” was interesting.
China did save North Korea in the Korean War (albeit for its own national security interests), and China is now again somewhat involved in the current issues.
Part of our anxiety over North Korean nuclear weapons is that their missiles can reach Guam and Tokyo. However, Kirk noted that China has always been viewed with “suspicion, resentment, fear and bitterness” by the North, and Beijing and Shanghai are a lot closer to North Korea than our guys are. Something to think about.
