Excessive heat likely a factor in deaths of Las Vegas homeless people

Scorching conditions the past three days likely contributed to the deaths of three apparently homeless people in Las Vegas, according to city officials.

Further information on the deceased was not provided. In response, officials are enhancing their efforts to provide cool shelters.

“We, along with community partners and homeless service providers, are stepping up outreach efforts,” Las Vegas officials wrote today in a blog post.

Temperatures weren’t expected to rise above 99 degrees today, but will increasingly worsen through the weekend and early next week. Saturday will reach 107; Sunday 106 and Monday 110, according to the National Weather Service.

Tuesday, when there’s an excessive heat warning, temperatures are expected at 113 degrees.

Civilians who want to help are asked to bring water to the Homeless Resource Center in the Corridor of Hope, 314 Foremaster Lane. Officials advise to not distribute water in the streets “as we want people out of the heat in a cool place.”

You can also direct those who need it to a cooling station, day shelter or the homeless corridor courtyard near Las Vegas Boulevard and Foremaster.
