Police seek leads in fatal drive-by shooting

Raheem Rice was walking to a house party earlier this month when a car pulled up and someone opened fire, killing him and wounding a teenager, according to Metro Police. Police today made an appeal for information to help solve the case.

“Raheem was an innocent person who died just attending a house party,” Metro homicide Lt. Ray Spencer said. “Anybody who was attending that party could have been the victim that day.”

Officers responded about 1 a.m. on June 3 to Spring Blush Drive and Novelty Avenue, near Fort Apache Road and Patrick Lane, where they found the gunshot victims, police said. Both were taken to University Medical Center, where Rice, 23, died.

Earlier, officers had shut down the party in the 6100 block of Novelty Drive, police said. But Rice and the group he was with didn’t find out until they had already parked in the neighborhood and were walking to the house, police said.

That’s when a black sedan drove by, made a U-turn and at least one person opened fire from the car, police said. Multiple people fled the scene, police said.

Spencer implored anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or knows something about it to call police. One tip could solve the case, he said.
