Police: Officer fires weapon after driver flees traffic stop

An officer fired a shot after a driver fled a traffic stop, took off on foot and then turned toward the officer with an object in his hand, according to Metro Police.

Nobody was injured in the incident, and the suspect was eventually taken into custody, police said.

A patrol officer attempted to a stop on a black Dodge Durango about 12:35 a.m. today near Desert Inn Road and Boulder Highway, police said. A check of the license plate showed the plate belonged to a different vehicle, police said.

The SUV did not stop and headed north on Lamb Boulevard, driving north in the southbound lanes and narrowly missing several cars before stopping at the intersection with St. Louis Avenue, police said.

The driver got out and took off running with the officer chasing him, police said. As the suspect began to climb over a wall between two houses in the 4100 block of St. Louis Avenue, he turned toward the officer with an object in his hand, police said.

The officer fired one round from his duty weapon, police said. The suspect was not hit and continued over the wall before he was taken into custody a short time later. Police did not immediately release the suspect’s name or indicate what charges he might face.
