Suspension of Reno student gun protester lifted

A Reno school district has lifted the suspension of a student who used vulgar language while calling a Republican congressman's office to protest gun violence.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports Washoe County School District administrators said Friday they would wipe the two-day suspension from Noah Christiansen's record.

The district said in a statement it respected students' First Amendment rights but that they should also be educated in "manners of civility."

Officials also said they wanted to avoid the potential costs of fighting a lawsuit.

The American Civil Liberties Union had sent letters to the district earlier this week, saying it unconstitutionally retaliated against Christiansen.

Christiansen called U.S. Rep Mark Amodei's office when he walked out of school March 14 as part of a nationwide protest against gun violence.
