This house in the 3200 block of Hill Valley Street, near Cheyenne Avenue and Hualapai Way, caught fire Wednesday, May 2, 2018.

Unattended food left cooking in a northwest valley house Wednesday evening caused a series of events that injured an elderly man and killed three dogs, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

The man who had apparently tried entering the one-story, smoke-filled house and as a result ended up with soot covering his face and his hair singed, also suffered smoke inhalation, officials said. He was taken to University Medical Center in serious condition.

Three pet dogs died from the smoke, which also caused about $15,000 in damage to the property in the 3200 block of Hill Valley Street, near Cheyenne Avenue and Hualapai Way, where crews responded about 5:40 p.m., officials said.

The man and another resident were displaced.

“Fire investigators determined that both occupants were out of the house as food was cooking on the stove,” officials said. “The food caught fire and then spread.”
