A domestic disturbance escalated to a shooting, and a gunshot left a man dead and a newborn baby with a life-threatening wound Tuesday night in a southeast valley apartment, according to Metro Police.

As of late Tuesday, the investigation was in its preliminary stages, but investigators believe the single bullet struck the man in the chest, went through him and hit the baby in the stomach, homicide Lt. Ray Spencer said via online briefing.

The 3-week-old baby was rushed to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in "extremely" critical condition, he added.

The alleged shooter, the baby's uncle, was being questioned by detectives, but as of late Tuesday, he hadn't been arrested, Spencer said.

Officers were dispatched about 7 p.m. to the complex in the 3100 block of Key Largo Drive, near McLeod Drive and Tropicana Avenue, Lt. Grant Rogers said.

It began with an argument between the baby's mother and father, Spencer said. The alleged shooter was believed to be present in the couple's apartment but went to retrieve a gun from his apartment, which is about 40 feet away, Spencer said. He returned and opened fire.

The adult victim, a 41-year-old man, was declared dead at Sunrise Hospital, Spencer said. The mother of the baby and the gunman were cooperating with detectives.

"It's absolutely tragic when you have a 3-week old baby that has been the victim of gunfire," said Spencer, urging the public to seek assistance from a plethora of services available for those in domestic violence incidents.
