Metro Police announce DUI checkpoint in southwest valley

A sobriety checkpoint will pop up tonight for several hours in the southwest valley in an effort to prevent DUI crashes, according to Metro Police.

The operation will kick off at 7 p.m. and continue until Friday morning, police said.

Officers with expertise in drug recognition from Southern Nevada law enforcement agencies also will be on hand, police said.

“The checkpoint will identify drug and alcohol impaired drivers to include juveniles, young adults and older adults before they get involved in a collision, thereby increasing the safety for all Southern Nevada motorists,” police said in a news release.

“What seems like a small buzz can have deadly consequences when taking to the roadways,” the release said. “Illegal drugs, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines and lack of sleep can also impair your ability to drive safely.”

Authorities reminded motorists who have been drinking alcohol to avoid getting behind the wheel by designating a sober driver, using a taxi or ride-hailing service or calling a friend or family member for a ride.

Motorists who spot suspected drunken drivers are encouraged to call 911.
