This midterm election, candidates must stand for women — 2018 has been called the “year of the woman,” but the Trump administration and Republican-controlled Congress have made it their mission to attack reproductive rights at every turn, endangering women.
One of President Donald Trump’s first acts in office was to expand his Global Gag Rule, which bans health care providers that receive U.S. aid from even discussing abortion. Trump’s chokehold on funding has forced clinics to close and cut off access to birth control and safe abortion, with life-threatening consequences for the most vulnerable populations.
Every year, approximately 31,000 women die as a result of unsafe abortion, nearly all in the developing world. Under Trump’s Global Gag Rule, unsafe abortions and the maternal mortality rates will continue to skyrocket.
This week, we have an opportunity to protect women’s rights, from Nevada to Kenya. If you’re as fired up as me, vote for Rep. Jacky Rosen and urge her to support the Global Health, Empowerment and Rights (HER) Act to permanently repeal the Global Gag Rule and protect women’s reproductive health rights.
