President Donald Trump’s firmly stated intention to upend the 14th Amendment to the Constitution should send a chill down the spine of every American.
If Trump succeeds in this self-serving effort, which would deny citizenship to individuals born on American soil, the 22nd Amendment — no third term — will surely be the next to go. Trump has already suggested that “president for life” has a nice ring to it.
Fortunately, it is clear that this outlandish proposal is just another desperate attempt to get xenophobic voters to the polls for the midterm elections and is going nowhere. Even Trump must know it takes more than an executive order to rewrite our most sacred founding document.
