Free pet adoptions this weekend in Las Vegas

Maddie’s Pet Project in Nevada will host free pet adoptions in the Las Vegas area Friday and Saturday from multiple shelters and animal-rescue groups in the valley.

“It’s a 3-year-long campaign to elevate the status of dogs and cats throughout the state,” said Diane Blankenburg, the co-executive director of Maddie’s Pet Project in Nevada.

The organization awards shelters $300 for every dog or cat that is adopted during the two days — thus alleviating the expense for the free adoption. Adoption events are held twice annually.

The group aims to help support animal shelters, rescue organizations and animal service agencies across the state to help save and care for pets entering the shelter through multiple community events beyond free adoptions to include spay and neuter events.

Blankenburg said the organization’s mission is more than just hosting adoption events twice a year. It also hopes to bring more awareness to the local shelters and rescue groups so that people can adopt anytime throughout the year from them.
