Travelers use new automated screening lanes at the security checkpoint in Terminal 3 at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, Nev. on August 31, 2017.

McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas is set to get security upgrades that include adding more lanes at the "A'' and "B'' checkpoints inside Terminal 1.

The Clark County Commission on Tuesday approved the $8 million project intended to make lines move faster by making changes that include adding more lanes and reconfiguring the queuing area.

In addition, more lanes will have automated screening technology that uses X-ray machines and cameras to sort items for Transportation Security Administration inspection.

Airport spokeswoman Christine Crews says work to add the new lanes will begin in early 2019 and take six to nine months to complete.
