Letter to the editor:

Kavanaugh is not on our side

Sexual violence can have short-term and long-lasting emotional, psychological and physical impacts on a survivor.

If U.S. senators want to send a message to survivors of sexual assault and reaffirm that their claims are taken seriously, they will vote against Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. Senators voting for Kavanaugh only show that taking care of special interests comes before the well-being of Americans.

We deserve to know the full record of a nominee who could sit on the highest court in the land. We need to ensure that the candidate who takes that seat is an independent voice to prevent abuses of power by the president. The Supreme Court plays a critical role in safeguarding our civil and human rights.

A decision should not be made until senators know the full extent of his views, because the vast majority of Kavanaugh’s records remain undisclosed. Transparency should be a nonpartisan concern.
