Las Vegas man driving 110 mph in crash that killed 10-year-old nephew

Accelerating 75 mph past the speed limit, a motorist likely did not see a park, a house and an apartment complex as he whizzed through an east Las Vegas neighborhood and caused a fiery crash that killed his 10-year-old nephew.

Instead of helping the boy — who died six days later — or his other passenger, who suffered a femur fracture, Jonathan Mora, 23, was seen stumbling out of the car and heard screaming, “my nephew, my nephew,” before he climbed a wall, leaving a bloody handprint behind.

Just before the Sept. 15 crash, Mora had sped up to 110 mph in the 35 mph zone. Immediately after, he fled to his parents’ house, police said.

When he arrived, he only told them he’d been in a crash, washing blood off before fleeing again, police said.

His whereabouts remained unknown to Metro Police as of Friday evening. Felony warrants for his arrest, including one of a murder charge, were issued, Las Vegas Justice Court records show.

Mora is considered armed and dangerous, police said.

Officers and medics responded about 11:30 p.m. that night to Vegas Valley Drive and Mountain Vista Street, police said.

An unconscious Zion Jimenez, 10, was pulled by bystanders from Mora’s 2016 Nissan Altima, which at some point caught fire, police said.

The boy was rushed to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he died. Another passenger in the Altima, a 20-year-old man who broke his femur, and the driver of the other car, were also transported to Sunrise. The other driver broke his jaw bone.

His Toyota Camry had only sped up to 16 mph before the impact, police determined. Both cars were thrown dozens of feet before coming to a stop.
