This is a chance for the Desert Pines High football team to make its mark.
The two-time defending 3A state champion Jaguars, whose roster features many college recruits, have quickly become one of the state’s most successful programs. With that success came a promotion this fall to the large-school classification, where Desert Pines will face its stiffest challenge tonight against host Legacy.
Legacy, a power running team, enters on a two-game winning streak. It has the players, namely athlete Aaron Holloway and running back Jerry Martin, to match the Desert Pines athleticism.
But that still may not matter against Desert Pines, who won 60-13 last week and has a strong running game with Minnesota commit Cameron Wiley and speedster Devin McGee.
The game carries added significance for Desert Pines, which forfeited its Northeast opener two weeks ago against Canyon Springs as penalty for a bench-clearing fight, and can’t afford to fall to 1-2 in league.
It’s not the only game of interest tonight.
Green Valley travels to Liberty in a battle of Southeast League rivals, Centennial and Palo Verde face off in the Northwest League, and nine-time defending 4A state champions Bishop Gorman will take on Sierra Vista in what’s expected to be the Gaels toughest Southwest League game.
