Police: Suspect arrested after pedestrian killed in hit-and-run

Updated Friday, Oct. 12, 2018 | 6:22 p.m.

A motorist suspected in a hit-and-run crash Thursday that killed a pedestrian in the central valley has been arrested, according to Metro Police.

Amy McDermott, 36, was taken into custody today, police said, but further information about her arrest was not immediately available.

Officers and medics responded about 9:25 a.m. Thursday to St. Louis Avenue and 6th Street, where they found a gravely injured woman, police said. The Clark County Coroner’s Office identified her today as Fadila Popovic, 60, of Las Vegas.

Popovic, who died shortly after arriving at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, was walking with her husband next to a curb on St. Louis when a black Dodge Durango hit her from behind, police said. The driver left the scene without stopping, police said.

Detectives on Thursday afternoon released a vehicle description and today credited the community with leading them to a suspect.

“This could only be done with the assistance of the community. Together, we can make a difference,” Metro said in a statement announcing the arrest.

McDermott was being booked at the Clark County Detention Center, police said. It wasn’t clear what counts she was facing.
