A 4-year-old boy was killed and a woman suffered life-threatening injuries Monday evening when they were struck by a vehicle in a central valley crosswalk, according to Metro Police.
The crash victims, which included two young girls, are believed to be a mother and her three children. They were hit on Maryland Parkway and Katie Avenue, said Capt. Nick Farese, who described the episode as “another senseless death.”
The vehicle was traveling east on Katie when he plowed into the victims about 6:30 p.m., Farese said. In the aftermath, there was at least one stroller strewn about on the roadway, he noted.
The two young girls were in “good spirits” and expected to make a full recovery, Farese said.
The woman and the children were in a “clearly marked and identified crosswalk” and were walking “exactly” how they were supposed to be, and the motorist likely didn’t see them, nor did they likely see the vehicle, Farese said.
The boy died at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, and the woman was hospitalized in “very critical condition,” said Farese in an online briefing.
The motorist stayed at the scene where he did not show signs of impairment, Farese said.
The investigation remained under investigation into the night.
“I’m tired of talking to the public about this,” Farese said. “And unfortunately the public that hears this most likely are the ones that are doing what we’re asking them to do, and being good citizens, and being good pedestrians and being good drivers,” he said.
“If the public isn’t getting sick and tired of children losing their lives, and coming together to change the erratic and disgusting driving behaviors that is part of our community, I don’t know what else we can do,” he said.
