Not much was expected this season from the Mojave High football team.
The Rattlers played in the 3A state championship game last season, but another playoff run seemed unlikely after they were promoted to the large-school classification — especially after losing their top two players, who transferred to other schools.
The Rattlers, though, had another plans. They upset Las Vegas High 20-17 tonight in the regular season finale to grab the fourth and final playoff spot from the Northeast League.
“This is so meaningful for our kids,” Mojave coach Abraham Gonzalez said. “Everybody wrote us off.”
Noah Thompson’s 10-yard touchdown run provided the winning points. De’vann Underwood and Isaiah Harper also had touchdowns for Mojave.
The Mojave playoff run likely won’t be as long as last season, because the Rattlers next week face regional favorite Arbor View.
But, for tonight, that didn’t matter.
“We were able to hold ourselves up in the 4A, even if it’s the last playoff spot,” Gonzalez said. “Win or lose, we can say we reached the playoffs.”
