The Canyon Springs High football team has long been the kings of the Northeast League.

But with respected programs Desert Pines and Legacy joining the division this season, the Pioneers’ run was expected to be challenged.

Well, not so fast.

Canyon Springs enters its league finale tonight against Legacy with an undefeated division record, needing a win against one-loss Legacy to secure another Northeast title and No. 1 seed in next week’s postseason.

A Legacy victory, though, will likely force a three-way tie in the standings. All games this week are scheduled for tonight because of the Nevada Day holiday on Friday.

Desert Pines also has one loss in the Northeast — to Canyon Springs via forfeit — and should win its finale tonight against Eldorado, meaning three teams with one Northeast loss and a tiebreaker to determine the Nos. 1-3 playoff seeds.

The No. 3 seed is unattractive because that would mean a game at Northwest No. 2 Faith Lutheran to open the playoffs. Faith is widely considered the region’s second best team behind Arbor View.

The winner of the Las Vegas-Mojave finale will earn the Northeast’s No. 4 seed and face Arbor View in next week’s playoffs.

The Northeast isn’t the lone league with matchups of note as we inch closer to the end of the season.

In the Southeast League, league-leading Liberty hosts Basic, Green Valley takes on Foothill, and Chaparral hosts Coronado.

The playoffs begin in the class 3A with Del Sol at Boulder City, and Cheyenne hosting Sunrise Mountain.
