Pedestrian hit by truck, killed in crosswalk

A pedestrian crossing the street in a marked crosswalk was hit by a pickup truck and killed this morning, according to Metro Police.

The incident happened about 6:45 a.m. at Sahara Avenue and 15th Street, police said.

A 59-year-old Las Vegas woman started to cross Sahara after the pedestrian traffic signal illuminated for traffic to stop and the pedestrian to cross, police said. After she stepped into the street, she was struck by the truck, which was headed east on Sahara, police said.

The truck stopped after hitting the woman, then began driving away before witnesses stopped it more than 500 feet away, police said.

Officers detained the driver, Darcy Cooper, 58, of Las Vegas, police said.

The pedestrian was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where she was declared dead. Her name was not released, pending notification of her family, police said.

The incident remains under investigation.

The death marked the 98th traffic-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction this year.
